Honeysuckle (Flos Lonicerae, Jinyinhua) tea has been used for more than a century within traditional Chinese medicine, often consumed in the form of tea. Researchers have now identified a molecule (MIR2911) within the plant that directly targets influenza A viruses, a family of viruses that includes Spanish flu and avian flu (Cell Research)..
Now, modern studies show that this plant (some certain molecules within) has a broad-spectrum anti-viral activity which provides evidence of the medicinal merits of the plant. Also it is a great healthcare herb in summer. In southern China, especially in Guangdong Province, honeysuckle is often used in herbal tea (Liangcha) which features in refreshing one’s body, draining dampness, preventing heatstroke, and etc. Also, honeysuckle alone makes up a great drink in hot summer days.
